The largest rectangular pipe jacking machine developed by Komatsu in collaboration with Shanghai Machinery Construction Co., Ltd. has successfully completed the passage through the entrance and exit of No. 3 Pudian Station on Metro Line 6. This marks a significant milestone in underground construction technology, showcasing the advanced capabilities of the newly developed equipment.
This innovative rectangular pipe jacking machine is designed with a large cross-section, offering flexibility and asynchronous propulsion features. So far, two key technologies have been granted national patents. The machine’s cross-sectional dimensions are 2.7 meters wide and 4.39 meters high, with a mainframe length of 5.2 meters. Its design allows for efficient and precise tunneling in complex underground conditions.
Equipped with an earth pressure balance system, the machine ensures stable performance during excavation. It also provides excellent waterproofing capabilities and can operate in underground strata up to 15 meters deep. One of its most notable advantages is the ability to construct subway pedestrian tunnels without disturbing the surface—no road digging, no pipeline relocation, and minimal noise and dust pollution. This makes it highly suitable for environmentally friendly urban construction.
