On February 26, Guangxi Yuchai Group, China’s leading diesel engine manufacturer, unveiled its first Euro IV diesel engine, the YC6L-40, featuring independent intellectual property. This development marks a significant step forward in China’s push toward low-emission and energy-efficient vehicles, aligning with the national emphasis on a circular economy.
While the Beijing National III standard (equivalent to Euro III) had only been introduced a few months prior, most domestic diesel engine companies were still in the preparation phase for Euro III compliance. Yuchai, however, once again demonstrated leadership in independent innovation, launching a product that not only meets Euro IV standards but also surpasses previous models in fuel efficiency and emission reduction.
The YC6L-40 represents a breakthrough in overcoming long-standing technical challenges in the industry, particularly in reducing emissions and improving fuel economy. Its advanced injection and post-treatment technologies make it highly efficient, environmentally friendly, and suitable for both passenger cars and buses. The engine features high power output, low noise, and excellent reliability—key advantages that position it as a strong competitor in the domestic market.
Industry experts, including Zhang Xiaoyu, vice chairman of the China Machinery Industry Federation, have praised the achievement, stating that it brings hope for revitalizing China’s internal combustion engine sector. The success of this model is attributed to Yuchai’s collaboration with foreign institutions and its commitment to R&D.
Currently, the YC6L-40 is in commercial production and has already attracted several customers for verification. Notably, Beijing Public Transport Company has decided to equip its buses with Euro IV engines to meet the requirements of the upcoming Green Olympics.
Yuchai has now developed nine series of “China Green†engines, meeting Euro III and higher standards. Since introducing the Euro III engine last year, sales have exceeded 600 units, with projections of reaching 6,000–8,000 units this year. The Euro IV model is expected to see even greater demand within the next two to three years.
The diesel engine sector is a critical area for China’s participation in global industrial competition. However, many domestic engines still lag behind international standards in terms of emissions and performance. The development and implementation of China’s vehicle emission regulations have also been slower compared to European and American countries.
In line with the "China Automotive Industry Development Policy" issued on June 1, 2004, and the national "Eleventh Five-Year Plan," there is a clear focus on developing energy-efficient and environmentally friendly automotive technologies. The European III and above diesel engine market has been dominated by foreign manufacturers, but Yuchai’s latest launch signals a shift in this landscape.
Yu Ping, chairman of Yuchai, emphasized that rising oil prices and growing environmental concerns have made energy conservation and green development a global priority. With the 2008 Beijing Green Olympics approaching, both the government and society are placing increased emphasis on sustainable growth. For Yuchai, this presents both a challenge and an opportunity.
In 2006, Yuchai became the first company in China to introduce a domestically produced Euro IV engine to the market. The company continues to explore the “green power†market across various sectors, aiming to lead the way in eco-friendly engine technology.
