Rationally Utilize Resources to Ease Energy Contradictions and Promote Sustainable Development of China's Economy (1)
With the continuous growth of the economy and rising living standards, energy supply has become increasingly strained, leading to a growing gap between supply and demand. This issue has become a major challenge for China. How can the country make rational use of natural resources while improving production and living standards, save energy, and promote sustainable economic development? At the Energy and Sustainable Development Symposium held at the Boao Forum for Asia Business Summit in Wuzhou Hotel, energy experts and business leaders shared their insights and offered valuable suggestions for China’s energy strategy.
Improving energy efficiency was a central topic of discussion. Bjoern Stigson, Chairman of the World Sustainable Development Committee, highlighted that energy demand in Asia is rising rapidly, and the problem of insufficient supply is becoming a key constraint on economic growth. For Asian countries to achieve sustainable development, he emphasized five key areas: first, increasing energy use efficiency; second, improving the entire energy system; third, establishing an energy reserve mechanism and planning for development; fourth, building sustainable transport infrastructure; and fifth, fostering cooperation between developed and developing nations to share technology, capital, and experience.
Wang Jiming, Vice Chairman of Sinopec, emphasized that as a major domestic energy producer and consumer, Sinopec must prioritize energy conservation. He suggested relying on advanced technologies to scale up operations, closing down outdated and unsafe facilities like small oil refineries and chemical plants, and optimizing the energy structure through integration across the supply chain. Strengthening internal management and implementing effective energy-saving and environmental protection policies are also essential steps toward greater efficiency.
Fisher, CEO of Germany's Degussa, noted that energy consumption has surged alongside improved living standards, particularly in developing countries. While Germany has stabilized its energy usage, China’s continues to rise due to industrial growth, energy-intensive sectors, urbanization, and higher living standards. The main challenges for Asian countries include unreliable energy supply, low utilization rates, and significant environmental impacts from energy-consuming industries. To address these, industries such as chemicals and petroleum must focus on resource efficiency, energy conservation, and the accelerated development of energy-saving products and technologies.
Gao Chengzhi, President of Woodside Energy China, who has lived in China for over a decade, not only speaks fluent Chinese but also has deep insights into China’s energy pricing mechanisms. He stressed the importance of promoting clean energy production and consumption as a vital path toward a more sustainable future.
