Yuchai launches China's first Euro IV diesel engine

On February 26, Guangxi Yuchai Group, China's leading diesel engine manufacturer, unveiled its first domestically developed Euro IV engine model, the YC6L-40. This significant milestone marks a major step forward in China’s efforts to promote low-emission and energy-efficient vehicles, aligning with the national push for a circular economy. At a time when Beijing was just about to implement its National III emission standard—equivalent to Euro III—most domestic diesel engine manufacturers were still in the preparation phase for Euro III compliance. Yuchai, however, took the lead by launching an advanced Euro IV engine, once again demonstrating its leadership in independent technological innovation within the internal combustion engine sector. The YC6L-40 is expected to replace imported Euro IV engines, marking a breakthrough in China’s automotive industry. Zhang Xiaoyu, vice chairman of the China Machinery Industry Federation, remarked, “Since then, I have seen the hope of revitalizing China’s internal combustion engine industry.” The engine overcomes long-standing technical challenges related to emissions reduction and fuel efficiency, incorporating advanced injection and post-treatment technologies that not only meet Euro IV standards but also significantly reduce pollution while improving fuel economy. With high power output, low emissions, low noise, and high reliability, the YC6L-40 is suitable for both passenger cars and buses. Its development represents a successful collaboration between Yuchai and foreign institutions, combined with strong domestic R&D capabilities. The Euro IV engine has already entered commercial production, drawing interest from multiple customers for testing and integration. Notably, Beijing Public Transport Company has decided to order these engines to launch a green bus line in preparation for the Green Olympics. Currently, Yuchai has developed nine independent European "China Green" series engines, including models that meet Euro III standards, such as the 6A and 6L horizontal engines, as well as the 4W compact car engines. Since introducing the Euro III engine last year, Yuchai sold 600 units in 2023, with projections of surpassing 6,000–8,000 units this year. The Euro IV models are expected to see even greater demand in the next two to three years. The engine industry is a key strategic area for China’s participation in global industrial competition. However, most domestic engines still lag behind international standards in terms of emissions and other performance indicators. China’s urban vehicle emission standards are also behind those of Europe and the U.S. In June 2004, the "China Automotive Industry Development Policy" emphasized the importance of developing diesel engine technology. The "Eleventh Five-Year Plan" further outlined the direction for energy-saving and environmentally friendly automotive industries. Currently, the market for Euro III or higher engines is dominated by foreign manufacturers. Yu Ping, Chairman of Yuchai, stated that with rising oil prices and growing environmental concerns, energy conservation and environmental protection have become a global consensus. With the 2008 Beijing Green Olympics approaching, the government and society are increasingly focused on sustainable development. For Yuchai, this presents both a challenge and an opportunity. In 2006, Yuchai became one of the first companies to introduce a domestically produced Euro IV engine to the market. It continues to explore the "green power" market across various sectors, reinforcing its commitment to innovation and sustainability.
