The largest rectangular pipe jacking machine developed by Komatsu in collaboration with Shanghai Machinery Construction Co., Ltd. has successfully completed the tunneling process through the entrance and exit of No. 3 Pudian Station on Metro Line 6. This marks a significant milestone in underground construction technology, showcasing the capabilities of advanced machinery in complex urban environments.
This newly developed rectangular pipe jacking machine is designed with a large cross-section, offering flexibility and asynchronous propulsion features. So far, two key technologies have been patented at the national level. The machine's cross-sectional dimensions are 2.7 meters wide by 4.39 meters high, with a mainframe length of 5.2 meters. Its earth pressure balance system ensures stable performance during excavation, while its excellent waterproofing capabilities make it suitable for underground construction in layers up to 15 meters deep.
One of the most notable advantages of this equipment is its ability to carry out barrier-free construction for subway pedestrian tunnels without the need to dig up roads or relocate existing pipelines. This significantly reduces noise and dust pollution, aligning with modern environmental standards for sustainable construction. The successful completion of the first project demonstrates that Komatsu’s pipe jacking technology is well-suited for the challenging conditions in Shanghai, and it opens the door for broader applications in future underground space development. With increasing demand for efficient and eco-friendly construction methods, this innovation is set to play a crucial role in shaping the city's infrastructure.
