Spacemaker Acquisition Gives Architects and Developers ‘Automation Superpower’

Autodesk University 2020 was an incredible experience, full of innovation and excitement. This year’s event was packed with new updates, tools, and insights that we’ve been working on with and for you. What stood out most was the sense of connection—despite being virtual, it felt more personal and engaging than ever before, with lots of opportunities to interact with fellow attendees and Autodesk team members.

One of the most exciting announcements of the week for me personally is our agreement to acquire Spacemaker. This acquisition marks a significant step forward in our mission to bring AI-powered automation and smarter design solutions to the Architecture, Engineering, and Construction (AEC) industry. Spacemaker will join our AEC Design Solutions Group, and I’m thrilled about the potential this brings for architects, owners, and developers alike. As a reminder, the transaction is subject to customary closing conditions and is expected to close during Autodesk’s fourth quarter of fiscal 2021, which ends on January 31, 2021.

Founded in 2016 in Oslo, Norway, Spacemaker has developed a cloud-based AI platform that helps architects, urban planners, and real estate developers optimize building sites from the very beginning of a project. Their technology enables faster decision-making, better sustainability, and more creative design options right at the start. This early-stage optimization not only speeds up the process but also fosters collaboration across all disciplines involved in a project.

With Spacemaker, we’re addressing the growing demand for data-driven, automated design tools that empower our customers to make smarter decisions. The team at Spacemaker is one of their greatest strengths—over 110 employees, with more than 60% in technical roles, including software engineers, data scientists, and designers. Their co-founder and CEO, Havard Haukeland, started as an architect and has since built a company that’s redefining how we think about design automation.

By integrating Spacemaker into our portfolio, we’ll help our customers explore multiple design variations while optimizing them based on specific site conditions. This gives them more time to focus on the creative aspects of their work. In the coming months, we’ll be working closely with the Spacemaker team to expand their business and explore ways to integrate their technology with our existing tools, like FormIt and Revit. Additionally, Spacemaker complements our analysis tools, such as Insight, and we’re excited about the future of sustainable design capabilities we can offer together.

This acquisition isn’t just about adding another tool—it’s about driving more automation and intelligence into our products. We’re committed to shaping the future of Building Information Modeling (BIM) and making it easier for professionals to innovate and collaborate.

I’m incredibly excited to welcome the Spacemaker team to Autodesk. Their vision aligns perfectly with ours, and I can’t wait to see what we’ll achieve together.
