Box Alarm in Woodstock, 10-2-23
On Monday, October 2, 2023, at 5:10 AM, the Woodstock Fire/Rescue District responded to a residential structure fire on the 200 block of S. Jefferson Street. A local police officer was the first to spot the flames and immediately began alerting the residents. Initial reports suggested a major fire with someone trapped on the third floor.
Firefighters arrived within four minutes and confirmed a working fire on the rear of the house. All occupants were safely evacuated, and crews quickly launched an interior attack. Due to the intensity of the blaze, a mutual aid request was made through the MABAS system, calling for additional resources from neighboring districts. Seven fire departments answered the call, helping bring the fire under control in just 45 minutes.
Despite the fire being contained, firefighters continued to overhaul the scene and conduct investigations until 10:00 AM. Two pet turtles were successfully rescued during the operation. One adult male occupant suffered critical injuries and required medical assistance. A medical helicopter was requested, but due to poor weather conditions, it could not be dispatched. The victim was later transported by ambulance to Northwestern Medicine Huntley Hospital.
The home sustained significant smoke and water damage and is now deemed uninhabitable. All nine residents have been provided temporary housing and support through the American Red Cross. One firefighter also received minor injuries and was taken to Northwestern Medicine Woodstock Hospital for treatment.
According to preliminary investigations, the fire started on the rear deck and quickly spread to the attic. No working smoke detectors were found in the home. The cause of the fire is not currently considered suspicious, but the investigation is ongoing. Damage estimates are still being assessed.
