Box Alarm in Woodstock, 10-2-23

On Monday, October 2, 2023, at 5:10 AM, the Woodstock Fire/Rescue District received a call about a residential fire on the 200 block of S. Jefferson Street. A local police officer was the first to spot the flames and immediately began alerting the residents. Initial reports suggested a severe fire with someone trapped on the third floor. Firefighters arrived within four minutes and confirmed a working fire on the rear of the house. All occupants were safely evacuated, and firefighters quickly launched an interior attack. The situation was serious, and the fire was spreading fast. To manage the growing incident, the Woodstock Fire/Rescue District activated the Mutual Aid Box Alarm System (MABAS) to request additional help. Seven neighboring fire districts responded promptly. The fire was brought under control in just 45 minutes, but crews continued to overhaul the structure and conduct a full investigation until 10:00 AM. During the operation, two pet turtles were successfully rescued by the firefighters. One adult male occupant suffered critical injuries during the fire. Due to the severity of his condition, a medical helicopter was requested, but it couldn't be dispatched because of poor weather conditions. He was later taken by ambulance to Northwestern Medicine Huntley Hospital for treatment. The home sustained significant smoke and water damage, making it uninhabitable until repairs are completed. All nine residents have been provided temporary housing and support through the American Red Cross. One firefighter also suffered minor injuries and was transported to Northwestern Medicine Woodstock Hospital for evaluation. According to preliminary investigations, the fire started on the rear deck of the home and quickly spread into the attic. No working smoke detectors were found in the house. The cause of the fire is not currently considered suspicious, but the Woodstock Fire/Rescue District is continuing its investigation to determine the exact origin and cause. Damage estimates are still being assessed.
