The world's largest free forging hydraulic press enters the commissioning phase

(Zhang Zhehao, Reporter) Recently, the reporter learned from relevant departments in Shaanxi Province that a 16,500-ton free forging hydraulic press, developed by Shanghai Heavy Machinery Research Co., Ltd., has been successfully installed at the Shanghai Heavy Machinery Plant and is now in the commissioning phase. This hydraulic press was designed and controlled by the China Heavy Machinery Research Institute, formerly known as the Xi'an Heavy Machinery Research Institute. Its completion marks the final stage of the construction of a fully domestically developed free forging hydraulic press production line, which boasts complete independent intellectual property rights. This advanced machine significantly enhances automation levels and is capable of forging parts weighing over 600 tons. It meets the growing demand for large forgings in key sectors such as nuclear power, thermal power, hydropower, shipbuilding, chemical engineering, and machinery manufacturing—industries crucial to China’s economic development and national security. During its development, the hydraulic press incorporated successful experiences from both domestic and international free forging projects. It utilizes cutting-edge control technologies and adapts the processing of large castings and forgings according to the specific conditions of China's large-scale equipment manufacturing industry. The project involved complex aspects such as heavy lifting, transportation, installation, and commissioning. Over 10 key technological challenges were overcome, leading to multiple innovations that greatly enhance China’s capability in producing ultra-large forging equipment. The successful development of this 16,500-ton hydraulic press not only aligns with global trends in free forging technology but also satisfies the increasing need for numerical control, high precision, and specialization in large-scale forging operations. Compared to traditional water pump-driven systems, this oil-pump-driven hydraulic press offers better controllability of forging speed, a more reliable control system, lower energy consumption, improved economic efficiency, and enhanced operational dimensions. This advancement represents a major step forward in China's industrial capabilities and technological self-reliance.
