Consumers should be eco-friendly - plastic bags to pay it?

According to the latest notice issued by the General Office of the State Council, starting from June 1st this year, all supermarkets, shopping malls, and bazaars will no longer provide free plastic shopping bags. This new regulation has already sparked widespread discussion among consumers and businesses alike. As of the time of the report, over 100,000 people had participated in an online survey regarding the use of plastic bags. More than half of the respondents said that the absence of free plastic bags would affect their shopping habits. Earlier, a survey conducted by this newspaper’s Social Investigation Center and Sina News Center found that 73.9% of 1,786 participants expressed willingness to accept charges on plastic shopping bags if implemented in their area. In a random survey of shoppers in several Beijing supermarkets and malls, many customers showed mixed feelings about the ban on free plastic bags. Almost everyone claimed they support environmental protection, but some worried about the inconvenience of not having free bags. Ms. Lei, who just bought pork chops from Daoxiang Village, suggested that customers who bring their own bags could be rewarded when the policy is enforced, helping to gradually build public awareness of environmental responsibility. Zhang Dam, who left the Chongwenmen food market, was surprised to learn that free plastic bags would no longer be available nationwide starting June 1st. “It's really inconvenient,” he said. “If you need to buy something, you have to bring your own bag, but if you suddenly decide to buy something on the way, it becomes a problem.” Many respondents said they were now seriously thinking about how to adjust their shopping habits in the future. The State Office’s notice encourages the use of cloth bags, baskets, and reusable shopping bags, while urging companies to simplify packaging and adopt eco-friendly alternatives. It also encourages businesses and social organizations to provide free reusable bags like cloth ones to the public. While many consumers are still uncertain, most businesses have shown support for the new rule. Sun Jianhua, a staff member at Fangzhuang Carrefour, said, “This rule is good and should be promoted.” She added that people used to carry baskets and cloth bags decades ago, which was very practical. At Fangzhuang Carrefour, a green checkout lane has been set up at counters 21, 22, and 23. Shoppers using these lanes get priority, but the store no longer offers free plastic bags. Instead, they can purchase durable reusable bags for 2 yuan each. Around 6 p.m., as the supermarket got busy, many customers lined up at the registers. However, only a few people used the green lanes. Some rushed to other registers after learning that no free plastic bags were available. Miss Tian, who works at the green lane, often reminds customers that no free plastic bags are provided. “If a customer scans items without knowing the prices clearly, they may get upset when they find out they can't get a bag,” she said. Chen Jing, who used to hand out free plastic bags at the checkout, noted that some customers wanted to use them as garbage bags, and there were occasional complaints from those who couldn’t get them. Beyond large supermarkets, small retail stalls also consume a significant amount of plastic bags. Zhou, a shop owner, supports the new rule, saying it helps reduce costs.
