Consumers should be eco-friendly - plastic bags to pay it?
According to the latest notice issued by the General Office of the State Council, starting from June 1 this year, all supermarkets, shopping malls, and bazaars are required to stop providing free plastic shopping bags. This regulation aims to reduce plastic waste and promote more sustainable consumption habits. As of the time of the report, over 100,000 people had already participated in an online survey regarding the use of plastic bags. The results showed that more than half of the respondents said they would be affected by the change in shopping habits due to the absence of free plastic bags. Earlier, a joint survey conducted by the newspaper's Social Investigation Center and Sina News Center found that 73.9% of the 1,786 participants supported the idea of charging for plastic shopping bags.
In a random survey conducted at several Beijing shopping malls and supermarkets, many customers expressed mixed feelings about the new policy. While almost all of them agreed that protecting the environment is important, some were concerned about the inconvenience of not having free plastic bags. Ms. Lei, who recently bought pork chops from Daoxiang Village, suggested that customers who bring their own bags could be rewarded once the policy is implemented, helping to gradually build awareness of environmental protection.
Zhang Dam, who just left Chongwenmen Food Market, was surprised to learn about the nationwide ban on free plastic bags. “It’s really inconvenient,†he said. “If you want to buy something, you need to bring your own bag, but if you suddenly decide to buy something on the way, it becomes a hassle.†Many respondents said they are now thinking more carefully about their shopping behavior.
The State Council’s notice encourages the use of cloth bags, baskets, and reusable shopping bags, while also urging businesses to simplify packaging and choose eco-friendly alternatives. It also calls for enterprises and social organizations to provide free reusable shopping bags like cloth ones.
Unlike consumers, most businesses have shown support for the new rule. Sun Jianhua, a staff member at Fangzhuang Carrefour, said, “This rule is good and should be promoted.†She added that people used to carry baskets and cloth bags decades ago, which was very practical.
At Fangzhuang Carrefour, a green channel has been set up at checkout counters 21, 22, and 23. These lanes allow shoppers to pay faster, but no free plastic bags are provided. If needed, customers can purchase durable bags for 2 yuan each.
Around 6 p.m., when the supermarket was crowded, only a few customers used the green channels. Many rushed to other registers, especially after learning that free plastic bags were no longer available.
Miss Tian, who works at the green channel, often reminds customers that no free plastic bags are offered. “Some customers get upset if they don’t know the prices clearly and then find out they can’t get a bag,†she explained.
Chen Jing, who used to give out free plastic bags at the checkout, noted that some customers wanted to reuse the bags as garbage bags. “Several times, our cashiers received complaints because we didn’t provide them,†she said.
In addition to large supermarkets, small retail stalls also consume a significant number of plastic bags. Zhou, a shop owner, supports the policy, saying it helps reduce costs.
