Yuchai explores the internationalization of independent technical support

In February 2008, Yuchai received an official notice from the German TÜV Rheinland Group, a renowned certification body, confirming that its On-Board Diagnostic (OBD) certificate had been officially issued by the European headquarters. This milestone followed the E-mark certification of 26 Euro III emission-compliant models, which were granted in late January of the same year. The certifications covered key export models such as the YC4E, YC4F, YC4G, YC6J, YC6M, and YC6L, marking significant progress for the company. “This achievement highlights that Yuchai has become the first domestic heavy-duty diesel engine manufacturer to receive such certification. It represents another major technological breakthrough through independent innovation. With this certification, Yuchai’s products now meet the requirements of European ‘compulsory certification,’ opening the door to the European market,” said Yu Ping, chairman of the National People's Congress and Yuchai Machinery Group. Yu Ping emphasized that “Chinese enterprises must grow stronger and expand globally. Internationalization is not just a choice but a necessity. Owning our own technology is the foundation behind this strategy.” He added, “We will strengthen domestic and international joint ventures and collaborations to accelerate the introduction and application of advanced technologies. By integrating technical advantages, we aim to build a powerful R&D platform, enhance global competitiveness, and establish Yuchai as a world-renowned brand. Our goal is to transform Yuchai into a leading multinational enterprise.” **Building Yuchai’s R&D System into a World-Class Engineering Research Institute** In July 2007, the Yuchai Engineering Research Institute was established in Yulin City, Guangxi, as the headquarters of the Yuchai Group. Prof. Zhuo Bin, a renowned expert in diesel electronic control technology, became the director of the institute. The research institute is equipped with national-level enterprise technology centers, accredited laboratories, post-doctoral research stations, and the Guangxi Power Talent Heights platform. It collaborates with over 40 domestic and international institutions, including universities like Tsinghua and Shanghai Jiaotong University, as well as companies in the U.S. and Germany. These partnerships have helped create an advanced R&D platform centered on independent innovation, supported by Western technologies. “Establishing the Yuchai Engineering Research Institute marks a major transformation in our R&D system. It has significantly enhanced our innovation capabilities, attracted top talent, and accelerated product development and technological upgrades. This will further strengthen Yuchai’s core competitiveness and contribute to China’s diesel engine industry and economic growth,” said Fuping. Currently, the institute comprises 360 researchers, including 18 doctors, 56 masters, 28 senior engineers, and three individuals receiving special government allowances. This team combines multinational experience and practical expertise, supported by state-of-the-art facilities. In 2007, Yuchai successfully developed the urban passenger vehicle hybrid (ISG) technology, setting a new trend in power systems. In the same year, its Euro 4 engines won bids in Beijing and Hangzhou, securing over 2,000 orders and making Yuchai the only domestic supplier capable of mass-producing Euro 4 diesel engines. “Especially notable is the successful development of China’s first YC6L-50 Euro 5 electronically controlled diesel engine, which was launched five years ahead of the national emission standards,” said Fuping. Looking ahead, Yuchai aims to build its R&D system into a world-class engineering research institute, attract top global talent, and provide competitive policies and benefits to its scientific staff. “By leveraging the full potential of our researchers, we will create a world-class powertrain research base,” he concluded. **Independent Innovation and Patent Achievements** The number of invention patents reflects a company’s level of independent innovation. In January 2008, the Yuchai Engineering Research Institute was honored with the title of “Advanced Collective of the National Patent System” by the Ministry of Personnel and the State Intellectual Property Office. This was the only company in Guangxi to receive such recognition. Representative Mao Ping stated, “This honor is of great significance for Yuchai. It not only acknowledges our achievements in patent work but also serves as motivation for future efforts. It affirms our strong innovation capability and the high level of independence in our products.” Yu Ping added, “Patents play a crucial role in enhancing Yuchai’s market competitiveness and overall strength. Our participation in national projects, science and technology awards, and the 863 Program has been greatly supported by the appraisal of our state-level enterprise technology center.” With growing emphasis on independent innovation, Yuchai has made significant strides in recent years. Through training and awareness campaigns, the company has demystified patents and improved internal processes. “Applying for patents ensures that our innovations are protected and effectively implemented,” said Yu Ping. Yuchai has also continuously improved its intellectual property management systems, building a robust patent management platform. This has enabled the continuous formation of patented technologies, which are now integrated into product development. Under the leadership of top management, including the chief engineer, Yuchai has established a structured patent work network with clear annual goals. Since 1998, the company has seen a dramatic increase in patents, from just 27 before 1998, to 85 in 2006 and 136 in 2007. These achievements have placed Yuchai at the forefront of patent activity in Guangxi, generating significant social and economic benefits.
