According to projections from international institutions, the global automotive market is expected to grow by 39% between 2001 and 2014. During this period, gasoline vehicles are projected to rise by 23%, while diesel vehicles are anticipated to increase by a significant 97%. This growth highlights the increasing importance of diesel technology in the automotive sector.
Diesel vehicles have gained attention due to their superior fuel efficiency and ability to meet strict emission standards. As a result, many countries—particularly the European Union, the United States, South Korea, and India—have recognized their potential and implemented policies to promote diesel vehicle development.
Firstly, these nations have positioned diesel technology as a key component of energy-saving strategies. For example, the EU has consistently supported the advancement of both diesel and gasoline technologies to enhance the performance and efficiency of conventional vehicles.
Secondly, governments have introduced fuel tax policies that make diesel more affordable than gasoline. In many EU countries, diesel prices are significantly lower, encouraging consumers to choose diesel vehicles. In South Korea, for instance, diesel costs about 75% of what gasoline does. Despite being 10–15% more expensive upfront, diesel cars offer lower operating costs, leading to rapid adoption in early stages.
Thirdly, some countries provide tax incentives or subsidies for diesel vehicles. In the U.S., for example, from January 1, 2006, to December 31, 2010, buyers of diesel cars could receive up to $3,400 in tax rebates. Similar policies have been adopted in other regions, with varying levels of support depending on local conditions and developmental stages.
Currently, diesel vehicles account for 23.7% of total vehicle sales in China, but only 0.2% of car ownership. In the first quarter of 2005, diesel passenger cars made up just 3% of new registrations, far below the 50% seen in the EU. Given this gap, China should adopt a diversified energy strategy, focusing on improving traditional fuel efficiency, advancing both diesel and gasoline engine technologies, and promoting alternative fuels and new energy vehicles such as hybrids, electric cars, and fuel cell vehicles.
Advanced diesel technology, unlike older versions, requires minimal infrastructure changes and offers a practical path toward energy conservation and environmental protection. It should be developed alongside cleaner diesel fuel to ensure better air quality. Experts predict that by 2010, 2015, and 2020, the share of advanced diesel passenger cars in China could rise from 0.2% to 5%, 15%, and 30%, respectively.
To support this transition, China needs to implement clear and supportive policies. For example, the "Eleventh Five-Year" plan for the automobile industry should explicitly encourage the development of advanced diesel vehicles. Currently, many regions impose restrictions on diesel use, and there is still confusion about the benefits of modern diesel technology. Most manufacturers are waiting for clearer policy signals. The central government should take a proactive stance, helping to eliminate misconceptions and regional regulatory barriers.
