Strontium Chloride: Upgrading to Main Direction
In recent years, China's barium chloride industry has experienced rapid growth. According to statistical data, over 20 enterprises across 11 provinces and regions are involved in the production of barium chloride, with an annual production capacity reaching 470,000 tons. As a result, China has become one of the world's largest producers and consumers of barium chloride, exporting its products globally and earning a strong reputation in international markets. According to China's customs import and export data, in 2005, the country exported 320,000 tons of barium chloride, generating approximately $11.62 million in revenue.
China possesses unique resource advantages for barium chloride production. The primary raw material is barium, mainly derived from barite ore and toxic heavy stone. Globally, proven barite reserves amount to 2.2 billion tons, with China holding 46% of these. Barite is found in 23 provinces and autonomous regions, with Guizhou being the richest, followed by Guangxi, Hunan, Hubei, Shaanxi, Fujian, Tibet, Gansu, Shandong, and Henan. Toxic heavy stone, a rare mineral, is only found in the UK and China. Although the UK's deposits were exhausted, China discovered 40 million tons of toxic heavy stone in Dabashan and South Qinling in the 1980s, along with 25 million tons of carbonate-type antimony ore. These resources offer a stable supply, with barium carbonate extraction rates reaching 77%, ensuring a solid foundation for the development of barium chloride production.
Despite this, the current production level still needs improvement. The utilization rate of barite or toxic heavy stone in China stands at around 65%, lower than the over 82% achieved in foreign countries. However, recent research and development efforts have led to significant progress, particularly in reducing waste and improving efficiency. Companies now adopt sustainable practices, such as using caustic soda to absorb hydrogen sulfide gas, recycling wastewater, and converting waste slag into building materials like hollow bricks. These measures not only reduce environmental impact but also turn waste into valuable products, boosting economic returns.
As market demand increases, users are placing higher expectations on product quality, especially regarding sulfur and iron content. Barium chloride is categorized into general industrial grade, electronic grade, high-purity grade, ultra-high-purity grade, and nano-grade. However, China's national standard (GB/T 1617-2002) only covers two categories, leaving high-purity and nano-grade products without clear guidelines. While some companies are working on advanced production, consistency and stability remain challenges. Currently, high-end products are dominated by Japanese, German, and U.S. manufacturers, leading to reliance on imports and high costs.
Experts suggest that the future of the barium chloride industry depends heavily on technological innovation. High-purity and nano-sized barium chloride are considered the most promising products in the coming years. To achieve industrial upgrading, China must focus on refinement, expand application areas, and enhance product value through continuous R&D and collaboration among enterprises.
Industrial upgrading is urgently needed. The future development should aim to build a safe, efficient, clean, and sustainable system, extend the industrial chain, and increase industry concentration. This includes enhancing scale through mergers, alliances, and cross-regional operations, while promoting technological advancement, automation, and modernization. Additionally, companies must embrace corporate social responsibility, improve environmental protection, and implement clean production technologies. By shifting from a linear model to a circular one—resource-product-waste-recycling—China can achieve sustainable development with minimal resource use and environmental impact.
