China will formulate new exhaust emission standards

Wang Binggang, a senior researcher at the China Automotive Technology and Research Center, recently spoke in Shanghai about China's upcoming progress in vehicle emission control. He mentioned that the country is set to introduce a new exhaust emission standard equivalent to the European Union’s Euro II level, while also preparing for the future adoption of a standard comparable to Euro III. This information was shared during the "2004 China Clean Automotive Technology Development and Application Forum," highlighting the nation’s growing commitment to environmental protection. The Euro III standard, introduced by the EU between 2000 and 2005, sets strict limits on harmful emissions: hydrocarbons at 0.66%, carbon monoxide at 2.1%, nitrogen oxides at 5%, and particulate matter at 0.1%. China first implemented the Euro I standard in 1999, marking a significant shift by phasing out leaded gasoline and carburetor-based vehicles. In the following years, the country planned to roll out the Euro II standard, with major cities like Beijing and Shanghai—both hosting major international events—adopting it ahead of schedule. Currently, most newly manufactured cars in China already meet the Euro II standards, and preparations are underway for the production of vehicles that comply with Euro III. At the same time, authorities are working on establishing a comprehensive system for monitoring emissions from vehicles already on the road. Wang emphasized that despite potential fuel supply challenges, oil will remain the primary energy source for Chinese vehicles for the foreseeable future. However, improving fuel quality to support the implementation of stricter emission standards has become a pressing issue. Additionally, he mentioned that China plans to gradually promote the use of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) as an alternative fuel, encouraging automakers to develop LPG-powered vehicles that meet both Euro II and Euro III emission requirements. This move reflects the country's ongoing efforts to balance economic growth with environmental sustainability. By Ye Ming, Xinhua News Agency.
