Chicago working fire, 7-5-14
This message comes from Eric Haak.
Saturday night, I responded to a structure fire on the 6100 block of South Washtenaw. When I arrived, the fire was already under control, which speaks volumes about how quickly the first responders got there. I managed to snap a few photos, including one of the spare tower ladder that Truck 39 was running with. Over the weekend, the department was short on spare tower ladders, so Truck 34 and Truck 54 had to step in and operate as regular trucks at some point. You can really see the wear and tear on these older E-One models; they definitely look more beat-up compared to the frontline rigs. It's worth noting that Squad 5 was using an older rig for their equipment box. Shop number G-487. Engines 88 and 101 were on scene, along with Truck 41 and Tower Ladder 39.

The first image shows a firefighter with an axe, preparing to vent the roof during the fire. The second photo captures several firefighters working together to vent the roof. The third picture highlights the thick smoke billowing from the house fire, giving a sense of the intensity of the situation. In the fourth image, you can see a classic 29-year-old Chicago tower ladder, showing just how long these vehicles have been serving the community. The fifth photo features Engine 101, one of the frontline engines that played a critical role in the response. Finally, the last image is of a firefighter with a grimy face, a testament to the hard work and dedication firefighters put into every call.
This incident really highlights the challenges the department faces with aging equipment, yet they still manage to respond swiftly and effectively. It’s moments like these that remind us why we need to continue supporting our firefighters and ensuring they have the best tools possible.
Grinding Mills
Grinding mills are machines used to break solid materials into smaller pieces by grinding, crushing, or cutting. They are commonly used in the mining, construction, and chemical industries to reduce the size of materials such as rocks, minerals, or grains.
There are various types of grinding mills, each designed for specific applications. Some common types include:
1. Ball mills: These mills use balls made of steel or other materials to grind the material. The balls are placed inside a rotating drum, which causes them to collide with the material, resulting in size reduction.
2. Rod mills: Similar to ball mills, rod mills also use rods instead of balls for grinding. The rods are placed inside a rotating drum and tumble the material, breaking it down into smaller pieces.
3. Vertical roller mills: These mills have a vertical orientation and use rollers to grind the material. They are often used in cement and mining industries.
Grinding mills can be powered by electricity, diesel, or gas engines. They can also be operated manually in smaller-scale operations. The choice of grinding mill depends on factors such as the material being processed, desired particle size, and production capacity.
