Why We Made the Elios 3

The first time I saw the Elios 3 in action was deep underground, in the world's deepest mine. It was at the Kidd Mine in Timmins, Canada, where we were testing a prototype of the Elios 3 alongside UAS Inc., one of the leading companies in drone-based mining surveys. It’s one thing to read about the features—like real-time 3D mapping and unmatched stability—but it's entirely different to witness a new technology in action. I was there to observe how the Elios 3 performed and what new possibilities it could bring to mining operations. That morning, we descended 4,600 feet in a mining elevator, then found a gallery for test flights. My colleague Johan Mlouka powered up the Elios 3 and started flying. Right away, the live 3D map on his tablet gave him full situational awareness, allowing him to navigate by the 3D model without even looking at the drone. This is a key feature of Flyability drones: most missions are BVLOS (Beyond Visual Line of Sight). The Elios 3, like its predecessor, is built for confined spaces where human access is risky or impossible. With the Elios 2, pilots relied on live video feeds. Now, with the Elios 3, they can also use real-time 3D models created during flight. During the test, the Elios 3 mapped a stope—a large chamber left after excavation—which provided critical geological insights into the mine’s stability. We also flew through extremely dusty areas, pushing the drone to its limits. What stood out wasn’t just the features, but the reliability of the device. It felt like a tool that had evolved from a novelty to a mature, trusted solution. Like smartphones that do more than just make calls, the Elios 3 works so seamlessly that you almost forget you're flying a drone, focusing instead on the task at hand. After four years of development, including partnerships with top universities and participation in DARPA’s Sub-T challenge, the Elios 3 was tested in over 200 field missions. From these experiences, we gained three key insights: 1. **Reliability is crucial** – Inspectors need tools that work every time. 2. **Ease of use drives adoption** – The Elios 3 is designed to be intuitive, so anyone can operate it quickly. 3. **Flexibility meets industry needs** – The Elios 3 is modular, adapting to different industries and their specific inspection requirements. One of the core technologies behind the Elios 3 is FlyAware™, our proprietary SLAM engine. It powers the drone’s stability, 3D mapping, and future autonomy. The LiDAR sensor, 4K camera, and thermal imaging all work together under this system to provide precise data in even the harshest environments. With features like 3D reporting and automated navigation, the Elios 3 is more than just a drone—it's a complete inspection and mapping solution. Whether you're inspecting a mine, a power plant, or a sewer system, the Elios 3 delivers the data you need with accuracy and ease. We’re excited to bring the Elios 3 to the world. Join us at one of our demo days to see it in action.
