Traffic Simulation Comes to Autodesk InfraWorks 360

The most recent update to Autodesk InfraWorks 360 introduces a more cohesive approach to integrating design and analysis, streamlining the entire civil engineering workflow. Roadway design often involves balancing numerous challenges—geographic limitations, budget constraints, adherence to geometric standards, safety considerations, and ensuring sufficient capacity for vehicles. The newly enhanced traffic simulation and analysis tools within InfraWorks 360 allow these elements to be addressed comprehensively within a single, intelligent 3D model. This significantly reduces the time needed to achieve consensus among stakeholders, ultimately accelerating project approval. In addition to traffic simulation, collaboration has been enhanced with the introduction of read-only model sharing options. This empowers designers to maintain better control over their data while introducing several new features for road, rail, and bridge design. Traffic Simulation has officially transitioned from the Autodesk Labs Preview phase to become an integral component of InfraWorks 360's Roadway Design. This capability provides designers with increased assurance that their designs will meet traffic engineering standards. They can now choose specific roads for analysis, customize traffic flow and mix, simulate different times of day (such as peak hours), define turn lanes, and configure signalized intersections—even roundabouts! By incorporating analysis into the design phase, potential issues can be identified early, minimizing back-and-forth revisions with traffic engineers. The user-friendly graphical interface of the Traffic Simulation module clearly indicates when roadways exceed capacity thresholds and makes it straightforward to pinpoint areas requiring adjustments. Other notable updates include enhancements to rail design, enabling users to create custom rail styles for greater flexibility in defining track structures like tunnel entrances or viaducts. Multiple rail features can now be grouped together under a single structure, such as using one bridge to support multiple tracks instead of separate bridges for each. Transition lengths between rail styles can also be specified. For road design, the update focuses heavily on intersection modeling improvements. The intersection editing tool now supports staggered intersections, offering greater creative freedom. Right-In, Right-Out, and Left-In, Left-Out intersections can be constructed easily, while roundabouts now accommodate both left-hand and right-hand driving conventions, complete with standard road markings and yield lines. Bridge design benefits from an expanded library of pier and foundation styles, making models more lifelike. Customizations to individual components like piers and girders can be applied uniformly across similar elements, enhancing efficiency. Additionally, model regeneration and calculation processes occur only when necessary, improving overall performance.
