New Zealand to Ban Three Pesticides

Due to concerns about dioxane contamination, the New Zealand Environmental Hazard Agency (ERMA) has proposed the sterilant pentachloronitrobenzene to be banned. Last year the country discovered dioxane in the fungicide product and ERMA initiated the review process. In addition, ERMA also proposes to ban the use of both organophosphate pesticides, pyrophosphorus and monocrotophos.

After the review, EMRA believes that this product and dioxane pollution will cause great harm to the relevant personnel when using and re-entering the application area in the turf and crop planting areas, and will also cause harm to unrelated personnel. EMRA also pointed out that there is no benefit from using this original drug, and quite a few alternatives have been proposed.

AMVAC's Terraclor 75 WP is the only approved formulation of pentachloronitrobenzene in New Zealand for use in the fumigation of vegetables, turf and ornamental plants. The importer is Nufarm, Nufarm has stopped related products during the review period. Imports and sales.

ERMA proposes to ban the use of both organophosphate insecticides with high phosphorus and monocrotophos. The Bureau stated that after the preliminary review, it was considered that the harm caused by these two original drugs to humans and the environment could not be mitigated by adopting personal protective equipment, extending the access interval after application and increasing the buffer zone.

ERMA has not yet determined what kind of benefits the use of these two original drugs will have for the environment or human health, and they also have numerous types of alternatives. In view of the disadvantages of using more than benefits, ERMA proposes to cancel the registration of these two products, and "eliminate these two products as soon as possible." However, if these two products are eliminated, it will still hurt the interests of some industries, especially the lemon growing industry. Therefore, ERMA will consider giving these industries a relatively long phase-out period and take the necessary risk mitigation measures.

In New Zealand, there are 6 and 3 related preparations of pyrophosphate and monocrotophos, respectively. Phosphorus is used in fruits, vegetables and ornamental plants, and 95% of lemon growers use this product. Monocrotophos is used in corn and vegetable crops. With the relevant safety measures, both products can be used for imported crops. Monocrotophos is a high-phosphorus degradant.

These two original drugs have been restricted to use in the United States, Canada, the European Union, China, Argentina, Samoa, and Côte d’Ivoire, or they have stopped selling themselves. Recently, Brazil also issued the monocrotaphos ban.

The deadline for public comment on the proposed ban on three pesticides is March 16. If there is no objection to the review, the final ban will be issued.
