Libertyville 2nd Alarm fire, 3-15-14
From Larry Shapiro:
Late Saturday evening around 10:15 PM, the Libertyville Fire Department received an emergency call about a barn fire on Bradley Road in Mettawa. Responding units were dispatched from Libertyville, Lake Forest, and Knollwood. When they arrived at 855 N. Bradley Road, they found flames engulfing one building within a large stable property. Libertyville’s Quint 462, Engine 463, and Engine 461, along with their tender, entered via the north driveway, while the Lake Forest engine approached from the south entrance. Lake Forest had access to a hydrant at the curb, and Knollwood connected to another hydrant near the north driveway to support Libertyville's firefighting efforts. Initially, before securing reliable water sources, the Libertyville tender and two engines had to take turns supplying water to the quint.
Within minutes, the alarm escalated to a Box Alarm, calling for additional resources, including water tenders. However, they managed to control the situation without needing mutual aid tenders. A second alarm was requested later for extra manpower to handle the extensive overhaul needed after the fire was contained.

The fire was primarily confined to the central part of the barn, though multiple hose lines, a deck gun, and a ladder pipe were deployed to ensure full coverage. The Lake Forest engine stationed in the south driveway, a Pierce Saber model, played a crucial role alongside Libertyville’s Engine 463, which was tasked with relaying water into the quint. Meanwhile, Libertyville’s Quint 462 utilized its ladder pipe effectively. Ice began to form on some of the firefighting equipment due to the cold weather conditions.

It was a well-coordinated effort involving several departments. Multiple units lined Bradley Road, creating quite the sight as they worked through the night. As of now, there’s no official word on the cause or extent of the damage, but the firefighters managed to prevent the blaze from spreading further.
I’ll post a video later once it’s ready. For more photos, you can check out fire scenes.net.
This is just a quick update from the scene, and I’ll provide more details as they become available. It was a long night for everyone involved, and the teamwork was impressive.
