Carbon companies produce high-end products for "money"

“The gap between the rich and the poor in the carbon industry is widening. Profits from companies that produce high-end products continue to grow, and most companies that produce low-end products suffer losses.” On June 19, Sun Qing, secretary-general of the China Carbon Industry Association, said in an interview with reporters. .

It is understood that the carbon industry is an industry that performs deep processing and utilization of pitch coke and petroleum coke. The rapid development of China's oil refining and coking industries has provided sufficient raw materials for the carbon industry; petrochemicals, iron and steel metallurgy, aerospace, medical, construction, and photovoltaic electronics industries have provided a vast consumer market for carbon materials, contributing to the continuation of the industry. Rapid development. In 2011, there were about 400 carbon production enterprises in China and 2.84 million tons of carbon products, ranking first in the world. Carbon products have been exported to more than 80 countries and regions in the world, earning foreign exchange of 7.2 billion U.S. dollars, and achieved rapid growth of over 12% for three consecutive years.

However, the rapid development of the industry also exposed the following problems:

The first is low industrial concentration and poor resistance to risks. The average size of carbon companies in China is only about 10,000 tons/year, and less than 15% of large-scale enterprises with complete processes and advanced technologies have scattered industries and disproportionate economies of scale.

Second, the structural contradictions in products are outstanding. The proportion of high-end products is small, the ratio of low-end products is significant, and the production capacity is in excess. Taking 2011 as an example, the output of high-end products such as specialty graphite products, ultra-high-power graphite electrodes, and carbon fiber products were 322,000 tons, 224,400 tons, and 8903 kilograms, respectively accounting for 1.14%, 7.9%, and 0.0003% of the total output of carbon products. .

Third, insufficient investment in technology research and development, cutting-edge core technology is still blank. The phenomena of heavy production and management and light technology development in China's carbon companies are widespread. The frontier technologies with independent intellectual property rights are lacking, and some raw materials and products are in serious shortage. At present, ultra-pure graphite materials with a purity of 99.99% are widely used in the nuclear industry, and all of them rely on imports. The needle coke raw materials required for the production of ultra-large-scale graphite electrodes require more than 80% of imports; 99.9% of high-purity carbon materials, In China, only a few companies such as Fangda Carbon and Sinosteel Jijiao can produce.

In view of the current situation, Sun Qing suggested that “carbon companies in China can only increase their investment in science and technology and strive to produce high-end products that are marketable in order to enhance their competitiveness and achieve sustainable development.”

First of all, we must actively adjust the product structure to produce products that are marketable. With the global economic slowdown and the transformation of China's economic development mode, the demand for common carbon materials in traditional fields such as iron and steel, metallurgy, and chemical industry is decreasing, and ultrahigh-power graphite electrodes of 600 mm or more that can improve product quality and production efficiency. And the demand for high-performance carbon materials has grown steadily. Enterprises can only consolidate the market if they can adjust the product structure in time to meet the needs of users.

Second, we must make great efforts to improve product quality and open up new markets. In emerging markets such as aerospace, solar photovoltaic, electronics and sports equipment, the demand for carbon materials has grown rapidly. Most of the high-end carbon products with high added value are needed. Taking the solar photovoltaic industry as an example, at present, monocrystalline silicon cells and polysilicon cells consume about 3034 tons and 234 tons of special graphite per million kilowatts installed capacity, respectively. According to the plan, in 2015, the installed capacity of solar battery power generation in China will reach 15 million kilowatts, and the special graphite material required in this field will reach 49,000 tons. The demand for high-end carbon materials in the fields of aerospace, electronics, and sports equipment will increase by more than 9% per year in the coming years. Only by strengthening research and development can companies share the business opportunities brought by emerging markets.

Finally, we must master the core technology and reverse the unfavorable situation in which some products and raw materials are severely short of domestic and profits are shared by foreign companies. At present, the needle coke used for producing ultra-high-power graphite electrodes is seriously deficient in the country, and its quality is inferior to that of imported products, which directly affects the production of super-sized graphite electrodes in China. For ultra-pure special graphite products such as neutron decelerators, reflectors, rocket and missile nozzle throat linings, etc., which have a purity of 99.99% or more, no domestic company can produce, and only a few hundred thousand tons per ton can even be seen. The profits of several hundred thousand yuan are shared by a few companies such as the United States, Japan, and Germany. If domestic enterprises pass technical breakthroughs and produce ultra-high-purity graphite materials for the nuclear industry with high purity and good safety performance, they can add more than one billion to several billion yuan in revenue each year.

This reporter learned that some domestic companies have already made gains in the high-end areas.

Since 2009, Fangda Carbon New Material Co., Ltd. has successfully developed ultra-high-power graphite electrodes with diameters of 600mm and 700mm, ultra-microporous blast furnace carbon bricks, and 4000 tons of components that can be used for nuclear reactors. More than 99.9% of ultra-pure graphite materials have achieved extraordinary development. In 2011, Fangda Carbon produced 185,000 tons of carbon products and realized a net profit of 614 million yuan, becoming the “richest man” in the carbon industry in China.

Jiangsu Surun High Carbon Material Co., Ltd. built a 30,000-ton/year high-purity carbon material project and realized a good profit; Heilongjiang Baotailong Coal Chemical Industry Co., Ltd. became Qitaihe City with its 50,000 tons/year needle coke production line. The big profits...

“In the past two years, the low-end product manufacturers that account for 80% of China’s carbon products have always had low profit or even lost business. Only 20% of the high-end product manufacturers have achieved better profits, and some have also doubled their profits. This shows that: Carbon companies only have a way out of producing high-end products, only the production of high-end products can only have 'money'.” Chen Guoqiang, vice president of the China Carbon Industry Association, said to reporters with an interest.
