Calumet Park house fire, 7-21-14

At around 7:20 PM on Monday evening (July 21, 2014), the Calumet Park Fire Department received a call about a structure fire on the 12400 block of South Honore. The initial response time for the first engine and truck was under two minutes. When the crews arrived, they found the residents safely outside and noticed a significant amount of smoke billowing from the front door. Firefighters quickly entered the building and identified the source of the fire in a back bedroom within minutes. Thanks to their swift action, the Calumet Fire Department managed to bring the flames under control and prevent them from spreading to other parts of the house or the attic. Neighboring departments, including Posen, Midlothian, Merrionette Park, and Riverdale, provided mutual aid support. These images, captured by Eric Haak, offer a glimpse into the intense firefighting efforts. In one photo, firefighters can be seen entering a house engulfed in thick smoke. Another shows flames shooting out of a window, highlighting the urgency of the situation. Other photos capture the firefighters' heroic efforts—some scaling ladders with tools, others positioned on the roof with axes, ready to tackle any structural challenges. The quick response and coordinated teamwork between the departments ensured that the fire was contained efficiently, minimizing potential damage and keeping everyone safe. These moments captured by Eric Haak serve as a testament to the dedication and bravery of our local firefighters.
