**SAN RAFAEL, Calif... February 2, 2016** – Autodesk, Inc. (NASDAQ: ADSK) announced today that its Federal Solutions Team and Autodesk Consulting successfully secured a $1.2 million research contract from the Air Force Research Lab's Advanced Power Technology Office (AFRL-APTO). This contract aims to demonstrate a Rapid Energy Modeling (REM) solution for buildings at Tinker Air Force Base (Tinker AFB) in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.
Tinker AFB, home to the heavy industrial Oklahoma City Air Logistics Complex, has been making strides toward significant energy savings. Recent reports indicate that the base is well on its way to achieving substantial energy reductions in 2016. Future initiatives for the Tinker Energy Team will focus on enhancing energy efficiency in both buildings and infrastructure.
**Streamlining the Energy Audit Process**
The REM approach simplifies and reduces the cost of preliminary energy assessments by offering insights based on a building’s structural design, geometric layout, and local climatic conditions. It generates a detailed 3D model of the USAF installation, including buildings and infrastructure, illustrating energy consumption visually. This helps identify retrofit measures that could lead to the most significant reductions in energy usage.
At Tinker AFB, the REM technology will assist Air Force facility energy managers in swiftly evaluating energy use and prioritizing buildings and actions to lower energy demands and costs. This initiative also sets a precedent for how the Department of Defense can efficiently assess energy consumption across its extensive network of over 845,000 facilities spread across 800 bases and 4,127 defense sites.
Under the Air Force Alternative Energy Program, AFRL is actively exploring solutions to enhance the Air Force's energy position. Reducing energy costs and improving energy security remain top priorities for the U.S. government, which mandates regular reporting on building energy usage.
According to Emma Stewart, Director of Sustainability Solutions at Autodesk, a validation project with the Department of Defense revealed that Autodesk’s REM approach was approximately 96% less expensive than conventional, labor-intensive energy auditing methods. “This technology will empower the Air Force to gain an immediate understanding of energy consumption at every facility and identify opportunities to cut overall energy usage,†she stated.
