Autodesk adds cloud-based Product Data Management to Fusion Lifecycle
At Accelerate 2016 in Boston, Autodesk unveiled a significant expansion to its Fusion Lifecycle suite, introducing cloud-based Product Data Management (PDM) functionality for the very first time. This new addition marks the debut of the world's first fully integrated end-to-end cloud-based Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) solution.
For product developers working at both established global enterprises and burgeoning startups, having a cohesive set of tools to handle every aspect of the product lifecycle is crucial. They shouldn't have to jump between different applications or platforms, constantly transferring data. Fusion Lifecycle answers this need with a unified product innovation platform that spans the entire journey from concept to market.
At the core of this platform is Fusion 360, which brings together Computer-Aided Design (CAD), Computer-Aided Manufacturing (CAM), and Computer-Aided Engineering (CAE) in a single cloud-based environment. In 2016, Autodesk strengthened the Fusion ecosystem with the introduction of Fusion Lifecycle for PLM and Fusion Connect for Internet of Things (IoT) data management.
The newly added cloud-based PDM functionality is seamlessly integrated into Fusion Lifecycle and is already available for use. It empowers engineers to collaborate on designs while managing their active CAD data and associated documents. Teams can now collaborate more efficiently on designs, track versions, and release them, ensuring smooth integration with downstream manufacturing processes for better data sharing across the organization.
Fusion Lifecycle simplifies design data management, making it as straightforward as organizing files into folders—only with automated revision control and version tracking. These new PDM features enhance collaboration between engineering teams and other departments within the company, enabling real-time design reviews, 3D file viewing and annotation, and streamlined management of Bill of Materials (BOM) and Engineering Change Orders (ECOs). All these new PDM functionalities are included directly within Fusion Lifecycle at no additional cost to subscribers.
Brian Hunter, Quality Control Manager at NovaCentrix, expressed his excitement about the new capabilities: "We've been using Fusion Lifecycle for over a year, and it has significantly enhanced our product development process. This latest addition—the full PLM solution in the cloud—is exactly what we've been looking forward to. It will dramatically boost our efficiency."
Looking ahead, Autodesk is also preparing to introduce more innovations to its Fusion portfolio to help manufacturers stay competitive in today's fast-paced market. One upcoming feature is Fusion Connect, which will offer Dynamic Predictive Analytics powered by technology from Nutonian. As industrial IoT becomes a larger part of global GDP, making sense of the vast amounts of data generated can be challenging without the right tools. With Nutonian's Eureqa, an AI-driven modeling engine, Fusion Connect users will gain the ability to automatically extract meaningful insights from large datasets and generate actionable recommendations. This capability will allow for highly accurate predictions regarding equipment failures, driving operational improvements, new service offerings, and a competitive edge.
Another exciting addition is Fusion Configure, expected to launch soon. It will bring enterprise-level Configure, Price, Quote (CPQ) functionality to manufacturers producing highly customizable products. As consumer demand for personalized and tailored goods continues to rise, businesses must adapt by offering more flexible production options. Fusion Configure aims to streamline the sales and order processing of such complex products, allowing companies to configure, price, and quote even the most intricate items within minutes.
Since Fusion operates entirely in the cloud, there's no need for costly hardware installations or extensive upgrades. This results in a lower total cost of ownership and increased flexibility, as engineers can access their design data from any location, ensuring continuous progress regardless of physical presence in the office.
Lisa Campbell, Vice President of Manufacturing Industry Strategy and Marketing at Autodesk, emphasized the company's commitment to transforming product development: "Historically, product creation has involved numerous disjointed software tools, leading to inefficiencies and high costs. We're committed to addressing these challenges and revolutionizing how products are conceived, produced, and utilized. Today's enhancements to the Fusion platform mark another step toward realizing a brighter future for manufacturing."
These advancements underscore Autodesk's dedication to leveraging cutting-edge technologies like cloud computing, AI, and IoT to empower manufacturers worldwide. By providing robust, user-friendly solutions, Autodesk continues to lead the charge in shaping the future of product innovation.
