We’re Tipping Our Hats to These Manufacturing Customers for Their Inspiration and Innovation

At Autodesk, we're constantly inspired by the countless companies reshaping design and manufacturing processes in innovative ways. Recently, we celebrated several outstanding organizations at our third annual Design & Manufacturing Excellence Awards, held during Autodesk University in Las Vegas. One of the winners in the Innovator of the Year category was Volkswagen Group of America. To mark the 20th anniversary of its largest vehicle research center outside Germany, the team at Volkswagen's Innovation and Engineering Center reinvented the iconic VW bus. With a focus on enhancing strength while reducing weight, they collaborated with Autodesk to apply generative design techniques to the wheels, cutting down both the overall weight and rolling resistance. The new wheels are 18% lighter than standard ones, and the entire development process—from concept to production—took only months instead of years. Another remarkable winner was Airbus, which took home the Industry Disruptor award. Their team in Germany is revolutionizing aerospace manufacturing through generative design. They've made significant progress on their Bionic Partition project, optimizing a partition that's much lighter yet equally strong, and can be produced at a fraction of the cost using casting methods. Additionally, they're applying similar techniques to other aircraft components like the vertical tail plane of the A320, aiming for improvements in mass, stiffness, and impact resistance. They're also exploring how generative design can help redesign their production facilities for greater sustainability and efficiency. In the Engineering the Impossible category, Dynamic Attractions won for their groundbreaking work in creating complex structures like theme park rides and observatories housing the world's largest telescopes. Using tools from the Product Design & Manufacturing Collection, they've enhanced workflows and productivity, contributing to numerous award-winning projects. The Industry Collaboration award went to LASIMM, a collaborative European project aimed at building one of the world's largest hybrid manufacturing machines. Equipped with both additive and subtractive capabilities, the LASIMM machine can produce massive metal parts and structures, offering potential cost and production savings over traditional methods. Lastly, in the Making a Better World category, KickStart International stood out. As a nonprofit organization, they're dedicated to alleviating poverty among African farmers by providing affordable irrigation solutions. Their MoneyMaker Solar Pump, designed with Autodesk Fusion 360, is currently being tested in Kenya and represents the lowest-cost solar pump available in Africa. Since its founding, KickStart has sold over 330,000 pumps, created a quarter-million businesses, and lifted nearly 1.5 million people out of poverty. These stories highlight how innovative technologies are driving change across industries, improving lives, and setting new standards for what's possible.
