Marine Firefighters of Marseille Test the Elios 2 for Ship Rescue Operations

The Marine Firefighters of Marseille recently conducted a test using the Elios 2 drone to evaluate its effectiveness in inspecting accidents and preparing for rescues on boats. This initiative aimed to enhance situational awareness and improve safety during ship-related emergencies.

Key Benefits at a Glance

Safety

Gathering visual and location data before entering a ship can significantly improve firefighter safety by allowing them to assess risks without being inside the vessel.

Performance

Flying a drone inside a ship is challenging due to signal interference and stability issues. The Elios 2 successfully handled these challenges, exceeding expectations.

Access

The Elios 2 was able to navigate all areas of the ship, enabling firefighters to collect critical visual data from every corner of the vessel.

Introduction

When the Marine Firefighters of Marseille are called to assist a distressed boat, they often lack detailed information about what's happening inside the vessel. In such situations, they must quickly decide whether to board the ship to save lives or prevent further damage.

One of the biggest challenges is identifying where to focus their efforts. Without clear visuals, the risk of entering an unsafe environment increases dramatically.

Customer Needs

The firefighters currently use two outdoor drones to get a view of the outside of a distressed ship. However, they have little to no visual data about the interior before boarding.

To improve situational awareness and reduce risk, they wanted to test an indoor drone that could livestream video while keeping the pilot and firefighters safe off the ship. This would allow them to make better-informed decisions before entering dangerous environments.

The testing focused on four key factors:

  1. Signal strength
  2. Stability during flight
  3. Collision tolerance
  4. Battery life

Solution

The Marine Firefighters chose Flyability’s Elios 2 for testing. This drone is enclosed in a protective cage, making it highly collision-tolerant and ideal for navigating tight, confined spaces like those found inside ships.

The test took place on a cruise ship with nine decks and two engine rooms. It was 429 feet long and 59 feet wide, offering a realistic environment to simulate real-world conditions.

Results

The test was a complete success. The Elios 2 flew throughout the ship, collecting valuable visual data from all areas, including lower decks and engine rooms.

"Innovations⚓ – The marine firefighters had the chance to test an 'indoor' drone aboard one of Cie Ponthier’s ships. This drone is capable of mapping inaccessible and confined spaces to aid in ship and boat interventions." – @MarinsPompiers

Here’s how the Elios 2 performed against the four criteria:

1. Signal Strength

On the lower decks, the signal remained strong, even two levels underwater. On the passenger decks, the signal was even better, allowing full inspection of multiple levels.

2. Stability

The drone maintained excellent stability throughout the flights, even in complex environments like engine rooms.

3. Collision Tolerance

During one test, the drone was hit by a sudden draft and collided with a pillar, but it continued flying without any issues.

4. Battery Life

Battery life was not a problem. The ten minutes of flight time were sufficient for the test, and multiple batteries were used to cover all areas.

Conclusion

The Marine Firefighters of Marseille are very satisfied with the results of the test. The Elios 2 proved to be a reliable and effective tool for ship inspections and rescue operations.

They are now evaluating next steps and plan to integrate this technology into their future marine fire rescue missions. With the ability to gather critical data remotely, the Elios 2 could significantly enhance both safety and efficiency in maritime emergencies.
