The Dean Stark apparatus (also known as the Clevenger apparatus) is a commonly used set of laboratory glassware in synthetic chemistry for the continuous separation and collection of water (or other liquids) from a reaction mixture. It works in conjunction with a condenser and a round-bottom flask to remove water produced during a reaction at reflux temperature. This device was developed by American chemists Ernest Woodward Dean and David Dewey Stark in 1920 for the purpose of determining the water content in petroleum.
