Code 4 fire in Glencoe, 4-30-15
At approximately 15:00 hours, I received a call about a fire that broke out on the roof of a construction site located at 328 Tudor Court. When I arrived, I could see several pallets loaded with styrofoam ablaze, creating a thick plume of smoke that was quite noticeable from a distance. The fire department from Glencoe was the first to respond, quickly heading to the scene. Northfield and Winnetka units were already there, with their ladder trucks extended to the rooftop where firefighters were actively using handlines to douse the flames. Glencoe and Northfield had secured hydrants nearby, ready to supply water if needed.
Wilmette arrived shortly after with their hose deployment but ultimately decided not to connect to the hydrant, leaving them without a water source. Highwood and Highland Park emergency services also joined the operation, adding their resources to the effort. A single construction worker was reported injured and was transported by Glenview Ambulance 6 to Highland Park Hospital for further evaluation.
As the situation unfolded, the intensity of the fire became clear in the images captured by Larry Shapiro. The smoke was so dense that it obscured much of the firefighting efforts, making it challenging for those on the ground to assess the full scope of the blaze. Firefighters worked tirelessly, climbing aerial ladders and maneuvering hoses under demanding conditions. One particularly striking image shows a firefighter scaling an aerial ladder while heavy smoke billows around him, capturing the sheer determination required to combat such a fire.
Other photos highlight the various apparatus involved, including a Pierce Saber fire engine positioned strategically near the scene, and a Smeal quint that played a crucial role in managing the fire. An E-ONE e-MAX fire engine can be seen connected to a hydrant, providing essential support to the firefighting operations. Additional shots depict firefighters pulling hoses and deploying equipment, showcasing their coordinated efforts to contain the flames.
The presence of multiple departments underscores the complexity of the situation, as each team brought its unique capabilities to bear. Despite the challenges posed by the styrofoam fire, which burned fiercely and produced significant smoke, the collaborative efforts of all involved eventually brought the situation under control. More photographs from this incident can be found on shapirophotography.net, offering a deeper glimpse into the day's events.
Reflecting on the scene, it’s clear that the teamwork and resourcefulness of the firefighters were key to managing what could have been a far more dangerous situation. Their ability to adapt and respond efficiently highlights the importance of preparation and communication among emergency services. As I left the scene, I couldn’t help but feel grateful for the dedication these professionals show every day in safeguarding our communities.
