STD ballast water treatment system is certified by BV type

US News, May 17: Severn Trent De Nora's BALPURE® ballast water treatment system has been awarded by the French Bureau of Shipping (BV) because the complete standard ballast water treatment system can handle ballast water with a flow rate of up to 5000 m3/h. Type certification. The standard system can be supplied in multiple sets to handle ballast water at higher flow rates.

The French Classification Society approved the type approval after strict examination of the BALPURE system in accordance with its relevant regulations and guidelines, as well as the relevant guidelines of the International Maritime Organization resolution MEPC.174(58). The review process involved a comprehensive review of land and onboard test results, corrosion test results, and hydrogen diffusion risk analysis (responsible by a third-party shipbuilder/Glosten Associates Marine Construction Engineering Company).

Severn Trent De Nora is applying for types from other classification societies such as American Bureau of Shipping (ABS), DNV, German Lloyd's Register (GL), and Lloyd's Register of Shipping (LR). Certification. According to the United States Coast Guard (USCG) Final Rule, published on March 23, 2012, Severn Trent De Nora is actively seeking to qualify for the US Coast Guard's alternative management system, aiming to become the first A ballast water management system certified by the US Coast Guard.

Jim McGillivray, general manager of BALPURE products at Severn Trent De Nora, said: "After obtaining the above type approval, the company can assure the ship owner that the BALPURE system is a reliable and effective solution to meet the stringent ballast water regulations. One of the tested solutions, the BALPURE system uses electrolytic disinfection technology, which Severn Trent De Nora has used to control microorganisms in industrial and domestic wastewater for more than 35 years. The technology has a long history in the marine and offshore markets. It has been proven to be an efficient solution to eliminate the hazards of aquatic invasive species.

BALPURE is an economical and reliable method of ballast water treatment and has been proven to exceed 10 times the IMO D-2 standard. BALPURE's turbulent treatment allows for remote placement away from the ballast water main line, and approximately one percent of the total ballast water flow is used to produce hypochlorite disinfectant. This turbulence method, combined with the design that only needs to be processed during the water absorption period of the ballast cycle, greatly reduces the energy requirements compared to other similar technologies, thus ensuring low operating costs.

BALPURE's patented self-cleaning electrode provides a virtually zero-maintenance ballast water treatment that eliminates the need for chemical and mechanical maintenance that can take a significant amount of time for the crew. BALPURE also received a third-party confirmation from GL Noble Denton, which after extensive testing confirmed that the BALPURE system has no adverse effects on coated steel, marine bronze and copper-nickel alloys.

Severn Trent De Nora will showcase the BALPURE system at the Greek International Maritime Exhibition (Posidonia), which will be held in Athens, Greece from June 4th to 8th, 2012.
