New ambulance for Niles Station 2

Niles Station 2 is getting another new unit ready for service. Last week, we shared the details of the new Engine 2 for Niles, submitted by Karl Klotz. Now, we're excited to bring you photos and more updates from Larry Shapiro on the newly delivered Ambulance 2. Here’s what’s happening with the current ambulance fleet: - The existing Ambulance 2 (a 2008 IHC 4300/2009 Medtec Type I) has been renumbered to Ambulance 3 and will be reassigned. - Ambulance 3 will now serve as a reserve unit. - Ambulance 3R is expected to be retired soon. The new Ambulance 2 is a 2013 Medtec Type I built on a 2012 IHC 4300 chassis. This was one of the last units produced at the Medtec facility in Bradenton, Florida, before it closed. It features modern design elements and updated safety features. Here are some key details about the unit: - **Chassis:** 2012 IHC 4300 - **Body:** 2013 Medtec Type I - **Production Order:** Shop order #26175 - **LED Lighting & Chevron Striping:** Seen in the rear view, enhancing visibility and safety Larry Shapiro captured several images of the new ambulance, including close-ups of the production plate and the unit itself. In addition to the ambulance update, Niles Fire Department is finalizing the specs for a new Engine 2. Once this engine goes into service, the following changes will occur: - The current Engine 2 will move to Engine 3. - The current Engine 3 will become a reserve unit. - The current Engine 3R will be disposed of. A correction from our previous post: The new Engine 2 is equipped with two 25-gallon foam tanks (Tank A and Tank B), which will enhance its firefighting capabilities. The pump on Engine 2 is rated at 1,500 GPM and includes a 500-gallon water tank, along with the two foam tanks. This makes it well-suited for a wide range of emergency responses. Finally, Niles is also working on acquiring a new tower ladder for Truck 2. When the new unit is deployed: - The current Truck 2 will be moved to reserve status. - The existing Quint 2, a 75-foot Pierce Arrow that previously served North Maine FPD, will likely be retired. These updates show that Niles Fire Department is actively upgrading its fleet to better serve the community and maintain high standards of emergency response. Stay tuned for more news as these new units come online.
