In the first half of the year, China’s auto production and sales increased by 30% into SAIC Motor’s sales championship
In a recent report by reporter Yu Liping, it was revealed that in the first half of this year, China's automobile production and sales surpassed 3.5 million units, marking a nearly 30% increase compared to the same period last year. The China Association of Automobile Manufacturers shared these figures, highlighting a strong recovery in the automotive sector. Notably, SAIC Group has overtaken FAW Group to become the leading automaker in terms of semi-annual sales.
According to the latest data from the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers, total vehicle production reached 3.635 million units, while sales totaled 3.5352 million units, reflecting growth rates of 28.94% and 26.71%, respectively. Passenger vehicles showed particularly strong performance, with production reaching 2.5963 million units and sales at 2.5116 million units, up 40.30% and 36.53% year-on-year. In contrast, commercial vehicles lagged behind, with production at 1.034 million units and sales at 1.0236 million units, growing by 7.16% and 7.71%.
The "Top Ten Auto Groups" for the first half of the year were also announced, including SAIC, FAW, Dongfeng, Changan, BAIC, Chery, Hafei, GAC, Geely, and Brilliance. Among them, SAIC Group led the list with sales of 621,400 units, a 54.85% increase compared to the same period last year. This marks a significant shift, as SAIC had previously struggled to surpass FAW due to challenges in the commercial vehicle market. However, with a booming passenger car segment, SAIC's joint ventures such as Shanghai GM, Shanghai Volkswagen, and SAIC-GM-Wuling all saw growth exceeding 45%. Even its commercial vehicle division, Shanghai Huizhong, achieved around 45% growth.
Meanwhile, FAW Group saw mixed results. While FAW-Volkswagen and FAW Toyota experienced strong passenger car sales, other segments, particularly commercial vehicles, faced negative growth due to market conditions. As a result, FAW Group sold 562,900 units in the first half, falling behind SAIC.
Chery and Geely, two prominent domestic brands, performed exceptionally well. Chery recorded a 72.15% growth, selling 144,200 units and rising from eighth to sixth place. Geely followed closely with a 55.62% increase, selling 105,900 units and moving from tenth to ninth. Additionally, Brilliance made a notable entry into the top ten with the success of its new model, Junjie, achieving 92,200 sales in the first half, a 62.11% increase.
This surge in domestic automakers reflects a broader trend of growth and innovation in China’s automotive industry, driven by both consumer demand and strategic expansion.
