Area departments commemorate 9/11
On the 9th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, local fire departments across the area honored the memory of those lost with solemn ceremonies. The Lincolnshire-Riverwoods Fire Protection District (LRFPD) and the Palatine Rural Fire Protection District (PRFPD) both held touching events to pay tribute to the heroes and victims of that tragic day.
At Station 541, members of the Lake County Honor Guard lowered the flag to half-mast as part of their commemorative ceremony. This moment was captured in a photo showing the emotional gesture that took place this morning. Larry Shapiro documented the event, highlighting the deep respect and remembrance shown by the firefighters.
Another image from the LRFPD shows their apparatus rolling onto the apron at Station 51, symbolizing the FDNY's response to the World Trade Center attack nine years prior. They rolled out at the exact time of the original FDNY dispatch, creating a powerful connection between past and present. Uniformed personnel from both fire and police departments gathered for a heartfelt flag ceremony, marking the occasion with unity and reflection.
Meanwhile, at Station 36 on Ela Road, members of the Palatine Rural FPD, along with the Inverness Police Department, the Palatine American Legion, and community members, came together on a rainy morning to honor the anniversary. A wreath was placed at the flagpole, a simple yet meaningful act of remembrance.
A Color Guard from the Palatine American Legion presented the colors during the ceremony, accompanied by bagpipers and a drummer, adding a somber and dignified tone to the event. Additionally, Palatine Rural firefighters who are part of the IAFF Honor Guard raised the flag to half-mast, further emphasizing the significance of the day.
These moments, captured through the lens of Larry Shapiro, serve as a reminder of the sacrifices made and the enduring spirit of those who serve. As communities come together each year, they reaffirm their commitment to remembering the past and honoring the brave men and women who continue to protect their neighborhoods.
