New ambulance for Niles Station 2

Another new unit is preparing to go into service at Niles Station 2. Last week, we shared the new Engine 2 for Niles, submitted by Karl Klotz. Now, we’re excited to bring you updated information and photos from Larry Shapiro, showcasing the newly assigned Ambulance 2 for Niles. Here’s a breakdown of the changes happening with the ambulance fleet: - The current Ambulance 2 (a 2008 IHC 4300/2009 Medtec Type I) has been renumbered to Ambulance 3 and will be reassigned. - The former Ambulance 3 will now serve as a reserve unit. - Ambulance 3R is expected to be retired and disposed of. The new Ambulance 2 is a 2013 Medtec Type I mounted on a 2012 IHC 4300 chassis. This particular unit was one of the last produced at the Medtec facility in Bradenton, Florida, before it closed. Larry Shapiro captured some great shots of this new unit, which features rear LED lighting and chevron striping. Once the new Engine 2 is operational, here's what will happen: - The current Engine 2 will move to Engine 3. - The current Engine 3 will become a reserve unit. - The current Engine 3R will be disposed of. A correction from the previous post: The new Engine 2 is equipped with two 25-gallon foam tanks, labeled A and B. When the new unit is in service: - The current Truck 2 will be moved to reserve status. - Quint 2, a 75′ Pierce Arrow that previously served North Maine FPD, is expected to be retired and disposed of. This marks another step forward in modernizing the Niles Fire Department’s fleet, ensuring continued efficiency and readiness for emergency response.
