Layoffs coming to Carpentersville (update)
The Daily Herald recently published an article discussing a postponement in the planned layoffs of two full-time firefighters in Carpentersville:
Carpentersville has pushed back the scheduled layoffs of two full-time firefighters as union leaders work to find ways to cut costs and keep those positions open, said Village Manager J. Mark Rooney on Friday.
"I'm very hopeful that the firefighters' union will be able to help us come up with a solution to avoid these layoffs," Rooney stated. This decision followed a meeting between the union and Rooney on Wednesday, where they discussed the original plan to let go of the two firefighters on March 28. There are 32 full-time firefighters in total, and the two at risk have the lowest seniority in the department.
Instead of focusing on a specific budget figure, the union is looking to make reductions based on their recent contract and will present the proposed savings to Rooney. The village board will then vote on the new fiscal year budget on April 1.
This extension gives the union more time to explore possible cost-cutting measures. Three years ago, during contract negotiations, the union agreed to several concessions to prevent the layoff of three firefighters. Those included reduced holiday pay, no salary increase in the first year of the contract, and a decrease in overtime pay.
Last fall, the union also accepted another agreement, which is now under review.
"We're actively discussing our options with our members," said Lt. Rick Nieves, president of International Association of Fire Fighters Local 4790. "We’re glad the village extended the timeline."
Earlier this month, Rooney announced plans to cut staff for two firefighters and three other village employees to address a projected $429,000 deficit. Similar discussions are also taking place with the union representing the other three employees.
In response to the announcement, firefighter Chris Scholl, a local resident, publicly questioned whether the village is truly facing financial difficulties. He started an online petition calling for Rooney's removal, citing what he calls poor management of village affairs.
As of Friday afternoon, 114 people had signed the petition. Scholl mentioned that most of the signatories have family members working in the village or are firefighters in other departments.
