Layoffs coming to Carpentersville (update)
The Daily Herald recently published an article discussing a postponement in the planned layoffs of two full-time firefighters in Carpentersville:
Carpentersville has put off the scheduled layoffs of two full-time firefighters as union officials work to identify potential cuts that could save their jobs, according to Village Manager J. Mark Rooney, who made the announcement on Friday.
"I’m very hopeful that the firefighters’ union will help us find a way to avoid these layoffs," Rooney said. This decision followed a meeting between the union and Rooney on Wednesday, where they discussed the original plan to let go of two firefighters on March 28. There are currently 32 full-time firefighters on staff, and the two at risk have the least seniority within the department.
Instead of focusing on a specific dollar amount, the union will look at its most recent contract and propose cost-saving measures for Rooney’s review. The village board will make the final decision on the new fiscal year budget during a vote on April 1.
The delay gives the union more time to explore possible reductions. Three years ago, during contract negotiations, the union agreed to several concessions to prevent the layoff of three firefighters. These included reduced holiday pay, no salary increase in the first year of the contract, and lower overtime compensation.
A similar agreement was reached last fall, which is now under review as part of the current discussions.
"We’re actively exploring our options with our members," said Lt. Rick Nieves, president of International Association of Fire Fighters Local 4790. "We appreciate the village extending the timeline."
Last month, Rooney announced plans to cut two firefighters and three other village employees in an effort to address a projected $429,000 deficit. He also mentioned that similar talks are ongoing with the union representing the other three affected employees.
Firefighter Chris Scholl, a Carpentersville resident, has publicly questioned whether the village is truly facing financial difficulties. He started an online petition calling for Rooney’s removal, citing what he sees as poor management of village affairs.
As of Friday afternoon, 114 people had signed the petition. Scholl noted that many of the signatories have family members working in the village or are firefighters in other departments.
