On Sunday, September 8, 2019, the New York Jets took on the Buffalo Bills in their season opener. While it was just another game on the schedule, this one had a unique twist — thanks to a collaboration with Avocados from Peru, the team unveiled the world’s largest guacamole bowl, weighing in at a staggering 9,000 pounds. And behind the scenes, Finishing Systems played a key role in preparing the massive stainless steel bowl for its grand debut. The bowl, constructed by Airside Inc., was designed to hold enough guacamole to serve thousands of fans during the game. To ensure it met both aesthetic and functional standards, we used industrial blasting techniques to refine its surface. We applied a combination of Starblast™ abrasive blasting and glass bead blasting to achieve a smooth, durable finish that would withstand heavy use. Starblast™ abrasives, made from tiny Staurolite sand grains, are known for their efficiency and low dust production. They’re ideal for applications ranging from equipment maintenance to rust removal. Meanwhile, glass beads, such as Ballotini® Impact Beads, provide a soft, smooth finish while being reusable and environmentally friendly. Together, these materials helped prepare the bowl for its impressive role at the event.
