Commercial fire in Waukegan, 6-15-20

Excerpts from the Waukegan Fire Department's Facebook page:

This afternoon around 3 p.m., the Waukegan Fire Department responded to a working structure fire at a large strip mall on the 2300 block of Grand Avenue. First-arriving units discovered smoke and flames coming from the roofline of the 15-unit strip mall, which also includes a large attached medical building.

Chief Bridges expressed immense pride in the firefighters who quickly brought the fire under control, preventing what could have been a major disaster. The community played a vital role as well, with residents helping to move vehicles that were blocking access to the mall. Thanks to the aggressive firefighting tactics, both the medical building and surrounding businesses were saved. In fact, more than half of the businesses reopened within two hours. While there was some damage, the situation could have been much worse. Fortunately, no one was injured.

Thank you to our neighboring fire departments for their assistance, as well as the Waukegan Police Department for managing traffic and ensuring scene safety during rush hour.

Waukegan Fire Marshal Lenzi is currently investigating the cause of the fire.

Waukegan firefighters were called to 2323 Grand Avenue this afternoon after roofers accidentally started a fire that caused significant damage to the roof, facade, and stores below. The incident was upgraded to a MABAS Box Alarm, with a North Chicago engine and Gurnee truck dispatched to the scene, along with additional crews from nearby towns providing station coverage. The fire was fully extinguished in about 40 minutes.

Tow Strap

Recovery straps and tow straps are sometimes used interchangeably, but it's important to note that both cannot be used for the same purposes. The main difference between a towing strap and a recovery strap is the fabric and its ability to stretch. These straps are made of a nylon fabrication so they can stretch. A vehicle tow strap is usually made of polyester which stretches less than nylon. A tow strap does just that: tows a vehicle behind another. You'll generally find a tow strap with hooks on each end. Traditional tow straps and chains are similar in their towing applications.
