Area departments commemorate 9/11

On the 9th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, local fire departments across the area honored the victims with heartfelt ceremonies. The Lincolnshire-Riverwoods Fire Protection District (LRFPD) and the Palatine Rural Fire Protection District (PRFPD) both held meaningful events to pay tribute to those lost on that tragic day. At Station 541, members of the Lake County Honor Guard lowered the flag to half-mast in a solemn ceremony. This act was part of a broader tribute to remember the lives lost in the September 11 attacks. A photo captures the moment, showing the respectful gesture by the firefighters. Larry Shapiro captured the scene. In another powerful display, LRFPD units rolled out to the station’s apron, symbolizing the FDNY's response to the initial attack at the World Trade Center. They arrived at the exact time the first emergency call was made nine years prior. Uniformed personnel from both fire and police departments gathered for a moving flag ceremony, reflecting on the courage and sacrifice of first responders. Meanwhile, at Station 36 on Ela Road, the Palatine Rural FPD, along with the Inverness Police Department and the Palatine American Legion, held a touching ceremony on a rainy morning. Members of the community, including friends and family, joined in honoring the memory of 9/11. A wreath was placed at the flagpole outside the station, adding a symbolic touch to the event. A Color Guard from the Palatine American Legion presented the national colors, accompanied by bagpipers and a drummer, creating a deeply emotional atmosphere. The sound of the pipes echoed through the rain, reminding everyone of the strength and unity shown in the aftermath of the attacks. Additionally, members of the IAFF Honor Guard from the Palatine Rural FPD raised the flag to half-mast, reinforcing the significance of the day. Each photograph tells a story of remembrance, respect, and the enduring spirit of those who serve. These events highlight the continued commitment of local first responders to honor the past while standing ready to protect their communities today.
